Ernest Edward Hockley was born in Barton Mills (Mildenhall Q1 1895 4A:833), son of Edward and Emily HOCKLEY (née TAYLOR).

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at The Street, Barton Mills with his father Edward HOCKLEY [38] coal merchant; his mother Emily [35]; sisters Edith [7], Ettie [3] and Hilda [1]. All were born in Barton Mills.

1911 census...Aged 16, an under gardener domestic, he was in Barton Mills with his parents ( father now a hackney carter) and sisters Ettie Evelyn and Hilda Dorothy. Sister Edith Emily was a domestic servant for the ROCKE family at Highfield, Overton Road, Sutton, Surrey.



He enlisted in Redhill, Surrey
His service records have not been found so it is unlikely we will ever find exactly where or when he was wounded. On the 29th June the battalion had relieved the 7th Royal Sussex Regiment in the front line at Bouzincourt. The majority of burials at Gezaincourt are from Casualty Clearing Stations and from June to August 1918 the 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital.
